Sciatica

What it is:
“Sciatica” is a term used to describe nerve‑pain radiating along the course of the sciatic nerve (back/buttock → leg → foot). It is not a diagnosis itself but a symptom of nerve root irritation or compression (often in the lumbar spine).
How it happens / risk factors:
Common causes include a herniated lumbar disc pressing on the sciatic nerve root, spinal stenosis narrowing the canal, or structural changes/arthritis near the nerve exit.
Symptoms:
- Sharp, burning or electric‑type pain radiating down one leg
- Numbness or tingling along the nerve path
- Pain aggravated by sitting, bending, coughing/sneezing sometimes
Why it matters for chiropractic care:
Early recognition is key. Conservative care (mechanical therapy, nerve mobilization, posture, exercise) often helps, but referral may be needed if severe, progressive neurological deficit or signs of cauda equina (bowel/bladder issues) appear.
